Kim Taylor-DiLeva is an author, educator and homeschooling mom. She was a classroom teacher and elementary school librarian for over 10 years before finding her life passion in writing.
When Kim had her daughter, she found a book on signing with your baby and thought
it would be fun to do. She started to read up on it and did more
research. What she discovered was that using sign language with hearing children
isn't just fun, but it can also help improve communication and speaking
vocabulary. This knowledge would have been helpful to have a few years
earlier with her son! She also found out that the visual and kinesthetic
properties of sign language has been shown to help preschool and elementary
school children to learn new vocabulary and is a tool that can especially help
struggling learners, struggling readers and struggling spellers. Kim felt
that this knowledge would have been helpful when she was a classroom teacher
and elementary school librarian. As a result, Kim decided that more
people needed to know about how wonderful sign language can be with hearing
children, and she wrote her book for librarians, Once
Upon a Sign. She is also a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and the National Storytelling Network.
